World War II

World War 2 began with two initial conflicts, the first in Asia as the Second Sino-Japanese war. This was fought between China and Japan from July 7, 1937 to September , 1945. The other was in Europe with the German invasion of Poland in 1939. America was brought into the war because of the attack on pearl harbor in December 1941.     The war split most of the world's countries into one of two powers - the Allied or the Axis. The war involved over 100 million military personnel. More than 60 million people (mostly civilians) were killed, therefore this was the deadliest battle in history. The Allies won the war, thus making the US and the Soviet Union the worlds leading superpowers.

The allied leaders of World War 2 were Winston Churchill of Great Britain, Franklin Roosevelt of the US, and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union. The Axis leaders were Adolf Hitler of Germany, Benito Mussolini of Italy, and Emperor Hirohito of Japan.

World War 2 was the most armed conflict in history. A couple of German weapons were the Karabiner 98K, or Kar98k. The Kar is a bolt action rifle with a long range of fire and holds five rounds per clip.Another was the MP44 or Machine Pistol 44. This was a sub machine gun, had a high rate of fire, and held about 30 rounds per clip. The MP44 eventually led to the development of the AK47. A couple of American weapons were the Thomson Sub machine Gun, and the semi-auto rifle, the M1 Garand. The M1 fires eight .30 cal bullets per clip. My favorite WW2 weapon is the Browning Automatic Rifle, or BAR for short. Its effective range is within 600 yards, it fired 300 - 650 rounds/ min, and used a Springfield .30-06 round. It had a velocity of 2640 fetter per second and it was fed by a 20 round box magazine, and a 40 round clip was briefly issued for AA use. The bar was rather heavy, weighing 19 lbs. when fully loaded.

Among the items that the next of kin would receive if someone was to be killed in battle would include a letter like the following that was sent in memory of my G-Great uncle, PVT 1st class James Martin...

"In memory of Private Jame W. Martin, A.S. No. 34829621 who died in the service of his country in the European area, July 3, 1944. He stands in the Unbroken line of Patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live, and  grow, and increase its blessings. Freedom lives, and though it, he lives - in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men."
